This is Gary Numan's new video "I am Dust" and is perfect to analyse as it fits straight into the genre I am researching.
Camera Angles/ Movement
Performance
- During the performance part of the video there are many close ups of Gary's face. This is used because of Goodwin's Star Theory. This suggests that music videos sell their artist not just the song.
- In addition to this Midshots of performance are used. This is to show the mise-en-scene and costume of the singer.
- Furthermore, a side angle close up is used but the singer sings straight; where the camera had previously been.
- The director has also used low angle shots of the singer to portray his power.
- The movement used is shaky but not quite erratic the majority of times. However at some points, for example the main parts of the chorus are very erratic. This is something that I'll have to take into account. The camera moves in and out of the singer and also side to side.
Narrative
In the performance parts of the music video there are various camera angles used to keep the music video interesting, for example, there are extreme close ups to long shots. Moreover, the movement during the narrative is quite still as many shots are in slow motion, such as the parts of the dancer with the deer as their head.
Editing
The editing in the video is great. This is something I would really like to create. During the performance part the editing is jumpy and fast creating a distorted feel. Furthermore, the narrative part of the video is slow and slow editing which is something that I've seen recently in my research and something that I want to put in my video. Also the colour of the narrative is a grey colour which looks really cool.
Mise-en-Scene
The Lighting in the video is what makes the video. There is a lot of strobe and bright flashes which is something I would like to put in my video. In addition to this the singer is wearing a black suit and the dancer is wearing a grey outfit with a deer head.
