Slipknot- Psychosocial- Analysis

On this rainy September morning I am going to analyse Psychosocial by Slipknot. This song is more towards the rock/ metal end of the industrial rock scale however it still will be useful to analyse as it could give me great ideas for my music video. The video is pretty much all performance so all the technical aspects will come from this.

I

Camera Movement/ angles

During the intro to the song there are multiple close ups of each member of the bands faces (masks) in slow motion. This is something that`ll be cool to use in my music video. In addition to this, there is a couple of long shots that establish the band and the setting. There is also a few extreme close ups of the drums and guitar whilst being played. Lastly there are many low angle shots of the main singer pacing and singing.
The movement is the main aspect of the video. Yet again the movement is wild and creates a distorted atmosphere. The movement never keeps a the main singer longer than 2 seconds on screen and never keeps him in the centre of the screen. The movement creates a feel like your watching on them performing.

Editing

The editing in the video is amazing! There is use of slow motion of the drummer playing and incredibly fast cuts. The same shot isn't on screen for longer than 1.5 seconds. The colour grading that is created is also again yellow again along with the red from the fire. This is a common thing used in the genre.

Mise-en-Scene

  • Setting- the setting is in a derelict field surrounded by destroyed houses. The band are performing inside a ring of fire
  • Costume- the band are wearing all black with face masks on.
  • Lighting- the lighting is very dark. The main light comes from the fire around the band.
